Established under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, VIT originated in 1984 as the Vellore Engineering College, a self-financing institution. In 2001, the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development conferred university status on the Vellore Engineering College. Dr. G. Viswanathan, the founder and Chancellor, is a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the Tamil Nadu Government. In recognition of his contributions to education, he received an honorary doctorate from West Virginia University, USA. Mr. Sankar Viswanathan, Dr. Sekar Viswanathan, and Mr. G.V. Selvam serve as Vice-Presidents, while Dr. Rambabu Kodali holds the position of Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Partha Sharathi Mallick serves as the Pro-Vice Chancellor I/C.
